Calculating Handicaps
Handicap Manager for Excel was designed with the ability to calculate golf handicaps in almost every possible way. When you click the Calculate Handicaps button, the Calculate Handicaps form will appear. The "Last" and "Current" handicap revision dates will fill in automatically with the last revision date and the current date but you can change the current revision date if necessary.
The current revision date is the cut-off date for scores you want included in the handicap calculation. Scores posted later than the current revision date will not be included. The program will recalculate the handicaps for all golfers by default. If you wish to just recalculate the handicap of one golfer, uncheck the "Calculate Handicaps for All Golfers" check box and select the golfer from the Golfers list box on the left. (The program will always use the last revision date for the current revision date when calculating a handicap for a single golfer. This allows you to make a correction for single golfer in the event a score was not posted or a score correction was made after the last revision.)
You may also select the handicap calculation method. The current calculation method is displayed in the frame below the Calculation Method button. Just click the Calculation Method button and select the option for the method you want to use. The program has three built-in calculation methods and also lets you define a custom calculation method. The Global method is meant to emulate the new World Handicap System™ that went into effect on January 1, 2020. The Traditional method is very similar to the USGA Handicap System™ that was used in the United States and many other countries around the world before January 1, 2020. You can also choose the Score Average method, which averages the differentials between the scores posted and par for each of the last 20 rounds played. This is the most basic handicapping method and is often used by golf leagues. For more information on selecting a handicap calculation method or defining a custom handicap calculation, see the Handicap Calculation Method topic. The program remembers your handicap calculation method selection so you only need to select it once unless you want to make changes later.
Once you've selected the handicap calculation method (and defined the custom handicap parameters if necessary), click OK to calculate the handicaps. Depending on the speed of your computer, this process may take a minute if you are tracking a large number of golfers. If you are using the Global calculation method, handicaps are calculated every day, so a calculation will be done for each day that scores were posted from the last revision date through the current revision date. All the other calculation methods will update the handicaps through the current revision date. A progress bar will display to show you the calculation progress for each day and a message box will alert you when the calculations have been completed.
Most golf leagues and golf clubs do handicap revisions either twice a month or once a week. If you are doing a handicap revision that is more frequent than that, you will be prompted to either overwrite the last revision or retain it for the handicap history. If you are just doing another handicap calculation to correct a scoring omission or mistake in the last revision, you should overwrite the last revision. If the handicap calculation is part of the normal revision schedule, you should retain the last revision. If you're using the Global calculation method, handicaps are calculated every day and only handicaps for the first day of each month are retained in the handicap history
Handicap related information is stored in the Golfers worksheet along with other golfer information. The golfer's name, ID number, home course, tees normally played, address, handicap and related codes, course handicap, handicap date, posted scores and average score are all shown. If a particular golfer does not meet all the conditions for the current handicap calculation method, an exception code will be shown in the "Handicap Type" column that indicates the problem. This "Handicap Type" code will also be shown on the golfers handicap card. (See the Preparing Golfer Reports topic for more details on Handicap Type codes.) You can also view a player's handicap and scoring information on the Golfer Stats sheet.
