Download Files

One of the best features of Investment Tracker for Excel is the ability to import data from CSV/Excel files that you download from your financial institution. We've structured the program to work with as many different downloads as possible but it has been primarily tested with downloaded CSV files from Fidelity Investments and Vanguard. Both institutions provide easily downloaded files that work well with the program. Here are a few tips to help you out.

Fidelity lets you download CSV files in a number of ways. The best option is to hold your mouse over the Accounts & Trade menu and select Account Positions from the drop-down menu. If you have multiple accounts with Fidelity, click the one you want to download on the left. Then click the 3-dots on the upper right of the Positions table and click Download. The file will be downloaded to the Downloads folder on your computer. It will be named something like "Portfolio_Positions_Mar-30-2025.csv". This is the file that you will be prompted to open when using the Update Account tool.

Vanguard has a similar download options but it is slightly different. The best options is to click on the Portfolio on the top menu and select Accounts. Then click on Download center on the right side of the accounts page. For Step 1, choose a spreadsheet-compatible CSV file, for Step 2, select any date range. It doesn't matter which one because all of Vanguard's downloads include all your asset positions. For Step 3, choose the account you want to update. It's important to only choose one account at a time if you have multiple accounts. Then click Download and the file will be downloaded to the Downloads folder on your computer. It will be named something like "OfxDownload.csv". This is the file that you will be prompted to open when using the Update Account tool.

The process for other financial institutions will vary. When possible, always download a CSV file that shows your asset positions/total shares. While Investment Tracker can also handle downloads of account activity and use those files to add or subtract shares accordingly. It is much easier to just deal with the total shares instead of keeping track of all the account activity since Invesntment Tracker only tracks total shares and values, not individual transactions. However, either options will work fine.
